TGCL

Tanzanian-German Centre for Eastern African Legal Studies
at the University of Dar es Salaam School of Law in cooperation with the University of Bayreuth

Academic Programmes

The TGCL is the leading academic institution in East Africa for postgraduate studies in the field of regional integration law. Its study programme has a special focus on East African Community law. Students will be qualified to take on responsibility as future leaders in the national, regional and international arenas for the benefit of their societies and communities.

The centre offers specialised LLM and PhD programmes which focus on regional integration law and approach other areas of law from the regional integration perspective.

All programmes reflect the growing importance of regional integration within all areas of law. Consequently, they comprise two compulsory modules on integration law. Students will gain a solid understanding of theories on regional integration as well as on East African Community Law.

LLM Programme

The one-year Master of Laws (LLM) in EAC and Comparative Regional Integration Law provides for a sound understanding of regional integration and East African Community law. Graduates with this degree are well qualified to take over leading positions not only in the public sector, including the judiciary, but also in various fields in the non-governmental sector.

PhD Programme

The three-year PhD programme allows for detailed and extensive academic research. It is tailored to be an effective starting point for an academic career.

Additional Programme Components

The additional training programme of the TGCL has been specifically tailored to meet the needs of future leaders in Africa. It includes the following components:

  • A seminar on Transferable Professional Leadership Skills.
The seminar provides training in transferable professional skills related to leadership qualities. Topics are career planning, time management, and rhetoric and presentation skills. In addition to group meetings, the student adviser is available for individual consultations on academic matters and career planning.

This course supports the students at strategic points of their research: research proposal, start and end of the field research, data analysis, thesis writing.

  • A course on Research Methodology is offered to assist the students in conceptualising their research projects and preparing their empirical research. Additionally, students receive individual advice on their research.

  • An intensive course entitled ‘Introduction to German Law and European Union Law’ provides a basic knowledge of these areas of law.

  • An Introductory Course on Economics provides insights into economics. It is held by a member of the Faculty of Law, Business and Economics of the University of Bayreuth.
